GRAFT is situated on the historic El Camino Real (what is now the southwest portion of 4th Street) in the Barelas neighborhood of Albuquerque. Barelas was founded in 1662 as a small agricultural community and its establishment predates the city’s “Old Town.” Barelas continued on to become the backbone of the railway-driven boom that fueled the development of Albuquerque as we know it today. The space itself has been in use as an art space for nearly thirty years now, ranging in use from a professional art studio to performance space to gallery, and has moved through multiple hands and names: in the last 8 years, it has been Donkey Gallery, The Normal, The Tan, and now GRAFT.
